When choosing a Jack Russell puppy follow these general rules:

Be Strong

If you are "in-the-market" for a Jack Russell puppy and visit a litter, try to be be objective as to whether one of the puppies is right for you. Seeing a cute litter of Jack Russell puppies is enough to tip anyone over the edge and you must remain level headed. Don't commit yourself to making a decision there and then on the spot. Go away and think about it if you have any doubts.

Look at the puppies parents

Are both of them present with the puppy? If not why not? If the father isn't present, ask the breeders about the circumstances. Do the parents look healthy and happy?

Quiz the breeders

Try to read between the lines as to why they breed their dogs. Is it to just to make money? Find out how many litters the bitch has had. Is she a just a breeding machine?

Assessing the puppy's characteristics

Assuming that it comes from healthy well-bred parents, look for the one that is friendly and outgoing. Generally, the biggest pup in the litter is prone to be dominant and demanding as an adult, while the runt of the litter may turn out to either be (too) mild or may have a Napoleonic complex!

Are you wanting a show dog?

If you're after a show dog and have no experience in show conformation, breed standards etc., then study the breed beforehand and listen carefully to the breeder about the pup's history.

Do you have children?

If you have a small child, then make sure you get a puppy large enough to defend itself. A puppy of less than four months old wants to do nothing else but eat and sleep and should reallly be protected from being teased and overtired by a young child.

Don't trust your eyes!

Don't be fooled by the puppy's appearance like it's markings or current coat texture as more than likely they they will both change! Both of my JR's both appeared that they would grow up to have a smooth coat and they didn't!
