Yep, young Toby - hope the little horror got a headache!!!

She approached the bus stop leading a perfectly behaved long-haired retriever, its lovely deep golden coat also a perfect contrast to the carefully chosen blue outfit. The eyes of every person at the stop, man and woman, followed her along and watched as she walked up the road, mine included.

And what was going through my mind as I dwelt on her slowly diminishing figure? Yes, you're absolutely right - I was thinking, "Where does she carry her poo bags then? I hope she picks up after that dog."

Sad but true. Not to go into too much detail but Toby was fine until mid-afternoon Monday, suddenly he couldn't stand, sit or lie comfortably, then started projectile vomitting,,,and vomitting,,, and - well, you get the picture. He's a sturdy lad, but he went downhill sooo fast until he could hardly stand. Whisked him off to the emergency vet (it would be Bank Holiday, wouldn't it?), who kept him 'in' for 4 hours whilst they did tests, which came back clear, and in discussion the vet said that the only time he'd seen a dog that ill, that quickly, was when it had eaten a frog/toad!! I suddenly remembered we'd had one in the garden about 6 weeks ago, but thought it had gone! Toby must have unearthed the damned thing and eaten it. Can't think what else it could have been!
So now I've got a much slimmer, still poorly dog, who's feeling so sorry for himself. We won't know until the weekend, when he comes off all his meds, how his tum is going to be, expecially when he goes back to normal food. But he's as bit brighter and getting there slowly. For 5 long hours on Monday, we thought we were going to loose him......Not a good week!!

Nipped down there today as they have an exhibition on 'The Ministry Of Food' all about WW2 rationing and how people coped with a shortage of food. It was facinating! We could all lean a hell of a lot from that way of life.
It showed how they maximised local produce and used seasonal fruit & veg. Obviously then they had to do it because they couldnt import food, now we NEED to do it to cut our carbon footprint. It also showed how they recyled EVERYTHING - another lesson this generation should adopt.

They also had an exhibition on about the holocaust (not recommended for under 14's as showed some VERY upsetting stuff) which again, was so interesting. I must admit i came out in tears, but i really think its so important that people realise the full extend of what went on and the suffering that people had to endure for their beliefs.

All in all a fab day out on a lovely sunny day in town! x

He thinks hes right with everything including how dogs should be trained/treated. He has the wierd illusion in his head that roxy knows what he is talking about and that 5 minutes after shes done something she knows what he is talking about.

He was playing with her and he hid her bone but when she went to lunge for it he blocked her out and she growled at him. He shouted at her saying "No growling!" and then he moved positions. She did what she always does if shes in trouble and tries to lick his hands with her ears and tail down. So he keeps going "Lay down. Stay!" so he makes her roll on her back and stay there while she looks like shes crapping herself because for some reason the man who she listens to is telling her to submit. Why? She doesnt know! She has forgotten about it now. All she knows is she licked his hands and now she is being made to submit.

I told him that theres no point in having a go over and over as she doesnt know what she has done now. He just said "well she clearly does she has her tail and ears down" He really annoys me.

Ive told him loads of times that its better to reenforce good behaviour and to not create bad experiances by shouting.
camping this weekend...(Sorry its long!) (3 replies)

Hello!

Got back last night from 2 nights stopping in Seascale on the west coast of cumbria....yes just next to sellafield....it was quite pretty and the beach was ace for Sammy to run on!

We got there Friday night, took us about 2 1/2 hours to get there from home, it had been a really pleasent journey right along the coast road (A595). Sammy had been really good. We got set up on the campsite which was brilliant, really modern facilities etc. Took Sammy to the exercise field to have a run and do his business etc before bed.

So he stops in the bedroom compartment with us, he tends to just kip on our feet or in between us which we dont mind coz he is extra warmth! So bearing in mind, he had a 2.5 hour journey, then after a run in the field in the pitch black, then another 7 or 8 hour cooped up in the tent.....

Saturday morning, he woke us up which was fine, I opened the door of the sleep part and was laid chatting to Adam, hadnt twigged that Sammy had got out of the tent altogether, he has snuck out the sides, I forget he can squish himself flat when he wants to!

So I got out the tent and saw him playing with another dog at the other end of the field, I shouted his name and he left the dog but ran full pelt at another lady walking across the field and jumped up at her. I shouted him again and he came pelting back at me and jumped at me.

I got back in the tent and told him off at which he did his usual apology stance! HOWEVER lady that he jumped at had come up to our tent and shouted at me that he had hurt her leg and that he was jumping up at another dog and that I should keep jim under contol....I felt about 1 inch tall, I was so upset!

Admittedly, 12 months ago, I probably would have been annoyed tooo never habing had dogs and also being quite afraid of them, but never would have thought to go and have a go at someone like that. I couldnt bring myself to come out the tent for about 2 hours after that!!!!! I felt so guilty about it and feeling shamed that I havent trained him very well etc.

anyway, didnt see the woman again thankfully and the rest of the weekend was quite peaceful. We got Sammy a harness as no matter what I do to stop him pulling on the lead doesnt work and he seems fine on that so pleased with that. Had to also get him a new extender lead as the clip as broken on the one we had. so we got the RSPCA one from Argos, my goodness it its huge! but its 8m long so thats good. The old one, we cut the lead out of it and used it with a tent peg to give Sammy some length to play without us having to keep an eye on him all day.

sorry its long, was just so upset from Saturday but then it turnde out quite well in the end.

OH is still stuck in the hospital and the RUGBY IS ON TONIGHT very late!! OK have the new TV (its on pay TV) and the new HD pay tv receiver thingy thats awfully clever and can record lots of things at once etc etc. No problem - EXCEPT the new clever thingy cant record to dvd, and the free playstation we got with the tv cant get pay tv (not so clever after all - bugger!!). Panic - was going to take it on DVD so he can watch on his laptop. Panic panic - hes going to be very upset and I promised. Trip to shed in dark with torch, grab old set top box. Not very clever but has record to DVD function. Next problem - how to hook it up to new tv and clever pay tv thingy with assorted HDMI, composite and component cables (dont know what they are but its like lego I think - if it fits in the hole it probably works! GRRRRR! 3 hours and lots of naughty words and dogs running off with cables later, I think I have it nailed - its not pretty and will probably implode, but as long as it records the rugby to DVD i dont care! Its a bit like Ikea assembly, I seem to have leftover bits!
