He's 5 months now and still on 4 meals a day at the minute - 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm and he wolfs these meals down like he's not seen food all day. I read that you reduce a meal when they start to pay less attention to one of the meals but this seems to be unlikely to happen. He has 125g of James Wellbeloved Dry Kibble per day plus a few treats (we break his treats right down into almost tablet sized pieces and use for rewarding good behaviour during the day - so doesn't equate to too much)

Thanks

Michelle

Ozzy's pics - Ozzy's Pics

She turns her nose up at all dog food both dry and wet varieties but will eat any fresh food such as mince or liver. After browsing this forum I have just given her a raw chicken wing and to my horror she ate the whole thing bones included whilst I thought she would just strip the meat of the bone. My OH is concerned that chicken bones aren't suitible as they splinter. We would welcome any advice concerning feeding of our puppy.
Many thanks

I explained about additives and said JWB is well thought of by those on Forum but it is quite an expensive option - are there any other good kibbles which cost a bit less? (I havent actually compared the prices of JWB with Bakers - must do so next time I go to the petshop) Anything that worked out as a few pence per 7kg bag would be a good incentive to change.

His mum will help with cost if we cant find a good alternative to JWB but thought it worth asking the question

Many thanks

I have researched the recommended weight for the 2 breeds which Archie is crossed with and have had different 'ideal weights' everywhere i looked.

How much should my Archie weigh? He is now 5 years old.

His weight has increased a lot since i first took him in. As a puppy he was mistreated and as a result was very underweight when i rescued him. The vets look at the increase over the last couple of years and see that it has been quite an increase from 2006 to today. However, this increase has been fairly gradual and he is now looking healthy.

To me, and to people who know Archie, he does not look over weight. He still has his 'curves' and his stomach area is still shaped as it should be.

I feed Archie a raw food diet which has had a noticable effect on his over-excited behaviour. He still has his loving and fun character but has calmed slightly.
The vet believes this to be the cause of his weight increase. I do not want to stop the raw food diet but am thinking maybe i should reduce his meal sizes? Archie does not like tinned food anyway and turns his nose up at it!

What would be the recommended meal size for a dog of this size?

Any advice would be appreciated! x

It always looks full of meaty goodness, like that ceaser dog food advert has loads of chunks of meat. I always look at his dog food and think christ that looks bland lol which probably explains why he just pecks at it. He only eats half a cup morning and half a cup evening (smalll cups) I'd like to mix it up a bit with other stuff (I've tried the waggs gravy which he likes a lot, but don't want to make it a habit of him having it as it does contain low amounts of salt) but don't know what things would be good, so I'm just seeing what everyone else feeds theirs.. Raw meat? veg? Tinned? biscuits? kibble?

Thanks!

A family bought a jrt off me 2 years ago also bought a lab puppy from my sister in law. He is also having a jrt from the litter due today. We have been talking recently and he is distressed with how over weight his lab is. I know labs get fat on thin air but any suggestions i have made dont seem to have made a huge difference.I have done all the asking about food brand, treats, scraps, exercise etc
I know there are some experienced lab owners on here - any advice please I could pass on to them to help - apparently she is 10kg over vets recommended weight!! The photos of her he sent through are unbelieveable, she is huge.
He is quite desperate for help.
thanks

Food change - is this ok? (3 replies)

Banjo is 30 weeks

and as posted previously he has been on / off food for a while - however this has improved slightly but still a struggle,
we were feeding him pedigree pouches that he liked but then went off, so we gradually changed to the tin veriety we always have the puppy complete dry food aswell, that he likes

it seems that he really doesn't like wet / tinned food at all and so we decided that when it runs out we will change it

theres only a few tins left and we have been gradually introducing new things

he prefurs dry food - but if i put it in his bowl as a meal, he isn't interested, however if i put them in his treat ball he will eat them?
also he will eat them from my hand (if fed 1 by 1) or he likes to work for them ie - if i say wait/leave - go on then etc he will wolf them down
i have tried all the 10/20 min rule of taking food up etc however he isn't bothered

i have even got down on all fours & pretended to eat from his bowl!!! (that stays between us) lol
then he will usually wolf it down?

so i have been thinking how i would like to start making his food, something that i can feed along with the dry,
not so much the barf diet -
but he has started having a raw chicken wing a couple of times a week - that is smashed up a bit 1st & held while he chews (ewww not nice being a vegetarian) lol but he loves them!

also i have put a bit of mince peas water brown pasta & herbs in the oven (covered) drained & then given when cooled with a few crunchies - that he seems to like - ive also made him meatballs with brown rice inside for treats that he kinda liked

but is this enough for him? if so how much do i need to giving him? & how often should i cook mince or give raw additional to the dry food - we have been introducing wagg & he seems to like it? i thought it might be better than pedigree?

i have read older posts but there wasn't much there to answer my q's

ive been told that if you feed raw meat to dogs then they must be wormed more regular? & that a sprinkle of garlic granuals
now & then is a natural wormer? (havn't tried this as ive also heard thats toxic?) ther seems to be so much contradiction on what they can/can't eat - so advice on that would be appreciated
i grow my own herbs but keep dried too are there any they can't have?

i really want to get rid of the tins & give him something better - i know that dry food has all the essentials but it's just boring!
along with any feeding tips!! as we are obviously doing something wrong : (

advice / critisizem / and recepies welcome : )

some doubts about feeding... (4 replies)

Hi guys, I've owned my jack russell, Maylo for one week, but I think that it is somehow overweight. My doggy is 2 months + old and weights 3,5 kilos. I feed him three times a day - 35g (per meal) Hills Science Plan for small breeds. What is your opinion about that because I've heard several different points? What is the optimal amount of nutrition?
