Advice - jumping, over excitable etc. etc.

Hello Things came to a halt with Bella, now over 4 months because of her foot injury. After nearly 2 weeks she is a lot better and walking on it normally, but favouring it now and again. Vet says to continue with training and socialisation, limit her as much as possible and restrcit jumping, stairs. We are due back Monday week for follow up.

The main problem I have is that now she is on the mend she is back to jumping again. I have thought about an outing to a petstore nearby, but she will jump up on any and everyone (we went once, before injury)

If I ask her to sit her response is jump, sit. She will stay and then come, jump, sit. Visitors are the cause of much, much excitement. She is quite small about 5kgs and can get to quite a height and will jump up. I cant take her to training classes for at least 2 more weeks.

Things have been difficult for her, no walks and for at least a week not much of anything physical in an effort to help her mend. But we are now playing indoor fetch.

So bearing in mind limited activity, any ideas on how I can calm her down. Oh, and she is quite wilful, so sometimes when I call her in she will jump onto the raised beds and just go round and rouind while I try to catch her. We have fenced in side of garden so she only has restricted space at the moment. It is the same if she gets anything like a sock, its catch me if you can. She will drop though, when we eventually get it and tell her.

She is full of fun and life and really sweet. We are retired, my husband has poor health, but there is someone at home most of the day, most days.

Thanks for any ideas of insights.

Hi Telly, the only thing that worked for my little leaper was ignoring her completely. Stand stock still, arms folded head turned away and no voice or eye contact. We called it playing statues and Roo got bored with the game after a while. You do have to be consistent and ask anyone she comes into contact with to do the same. If visitors come to the house its important to try to tone down the excitement, having her on lead will help and ask her to sit (yes I know - she probably wont) but ask visitors to ignore her and not make a fuss. Reward with a treat if she sits nicely when asked or if she stops jumping. Once she is calm let her off lead but don't allow the visitors to make a fuss of her, perhaps a treat if she is well behaved. It takes time but it does work. Good luck, as with most things terrier , consistency is the key!

Hi,

I agree with Debsters post, it does take time to train them to behave as you want them to but they do eventually get there with persistence. I wouldn't bother chasing her around the garden when she won't come in, it just becomes a game to them. I got around this by calling our dog in once, waiting a few moments and then closing the door. He soon understood that he needed to come in when called. If he didn't come straight away, I would wait for two or three minutes, open the door and then call him again excitedly with lots of praise when he raced in. He now comes in usually on first call, we use the keyword 'come' and then his name followed by good boy as he comes in. JR's are very bright and can be trained to follow lots of commands but it is very important to always use the same commands every time.

Best wishes,

Paul.
