If any of my dogs refused to move when I told them to or showed their teeth when I insisted I would no longer let them on the furniture.

Jack Russells really are the easiest dog to look after - all they ask is a warm bed, a kind word, a good meal - and total world domination!

i think i would sit next to the dog and pick them up swiftly, better than leaning over them i would say, if your dog knows your the boss it would never growl at you so i think you need to look at other areas to solve the issues to, like Angela said bout "the look" they need to respect you.

have you had him checked over by a vet? he could be in pain somewhere and doesn't like being touched!! My chow was really grumpy and aggressive cos he was in pain with osteoarthritis all over his body and i lost him at 18 months. It was a genetic fault!!

Just like Pauline, we've never had a dog that has lip curled or snapped and we've had quite a few dogs over the years. I do think that they try it on if they think they can. You have to have a very positive state of mind and be consistant for them to have respect for you (you have to have the utmost respect for them also). The only time our dog is picked up is when he's put into or vehicle as it's too high for him to get into unassisted. At all other times he's told to go where we need him to go. In general the only time a dog gets grumpy is if they're not feeling too good or if they have a painful injury. Under those circumstances it would be perfectly understandable for a dog to growl, nip or bite if they were disturbed. Tone of voice and body language should usually be enough for them to do what you want them to do.

You need to teach a good 'off' command. I teach clients to use this for dogs that jump up, for getting of furniture etc. Time, patience and lots of consistency is needed but its also easily done. There will be a reason that he is showing this behaviour, it could be something to do with the way others are using their hands with Max. We must keep our hands as good kind things and not use them as toys or for punishment etc. See if you can find out if anyone has used their hands in ways that Max may have found worrying at all. well the treat trick worked took a bit of time we have noticed its only at night time he moans as we move him off one of our laps or he is comfy on the sofa next to us he doesnt growl at me just a grumble but at my other half its a proper one. Like i said its only at night when he has to go off into the kitchen with lil for bed, i will work it out with him as i wont stand for it at all

As far as i am aware no one has done anything that would cause his reaction i dont raise my hands he just needs a stern tone of voice same as lil does i do think he was also pushing his dominace a bit to see what eles he can get as he is gettin braver at stuff now lil is a bit of a push over at times but she is also starting to tell him off when he goes to far as before she would stop and look to us to check it was ok kinda thing.

We will get there in the end im sure of it.

this has been really useful for me as today my son (17) messaged me to say that Roxxi had snapped at my daughter when she tried to move the bean bag she was sleeping on. I have told her before not to carry her about and treat her like one of her cuddly toys - Rox did growl at me one night when I picked her up to take her out for a wee before I went to bed and same at my OH this week - so now I know not to pick her up and just speak to her and get her to walk to the door herself.
