Jack Russell health issues - Constipation
Causes
The most common cause of constipation in your Jack Russell would be an incorrect diet. A lack of fibre (and sometimes excessive fibre) can be a problem> Constipation could also be indictative of something that they've sawallowed that is indigestible and has caused a blockage in the digestive tract.
Other causes include worm infestation, lack of exercise. Symptoms of bladder infections (such as straining) can also sometimes be mistaken for constipation.
Symptoms
Constipation can lead to a build up of toxins, which can cause numerous health problems.
- Straining to have a bowel movement with no result
- Abdominal discomfort
- Loss of Appetite
- Bloating
- Going for long periods between bowel movements
- Hard, impacted stools
Treatment
Offer soaked biscuits rather than totally dry food, and also lightly cooked green vegetables. A teaspoonful of oil can also help to clear out any blockage. If this does not work, a mild laxative may be prescribed by your vet.
In more serious casesto remove hardened stools which have impacted in the colon, an enema may be required.
