Jack Russell health issues - Dairy Product Intolerance
What are the problems with dairy products?
Dairy products contain an enzyme called lactose and some dogs (depending on the individual) do not produce an enzyme called lactase which helps with the digestion of lactose
How do you know if your dog is lactose intolerant?
You'll soon know if your Jack is lactose intolerance as he/ she will develop diarrhea or loose stools whenever a dairy product is fed. It may also be idenitified by a rash on the tummy or under the legs, either in patches or spots and also by loose stools.
If either of these symptoms do show, obviously stop feeding them more dairy products and it is also a wise move to advise your vet of this fact and discuss the potential dietary implications.
Can you feed your Jack any dairy products at all?
This all depends on what it is. Even Jacks with milk intolerance can still consume dairy products under certain circumstances. For example, dairy products such as cheese (including cottage cheese) and unpasteurized yogurt usually have the lactose removed or have it partially broken down through bacterial action.
Should you give milk to your Jack Russell?
Milk is not necessary to a dog's diet so I would not recommend giving it, even as a treat. Although it can be an excellent source of protein and calcium, find an alternative in the form of diet or supplements.
How come puppies can drink milk from their mother then?
After weaning, the level of lactase activity in dogs falls to about 10 per cent of its peak activity. Also, milk from a cow or goat contains 4.5 to 5 per cent lactose, compared to 3.1 per cent in a bitch's milk (lactating female dogs). This higher level of lactose can overpower a dog or cat's ability to digest it.
