Jack Russell health issues - Heat Stroke in dogs

Every day dogs suffer from heat stroke due to inattention by their owners. In most cases, the pet is left "for just a minute"... but for various reasons the pet's owner is distracted or delayed and returns to the vehicle to see their pet collapsed, salivating, panting uncontrollably and loosing consciousness.

Factors contributing to heat stroke

Heat stroke can affect any dog but will be exasperated by the following factors:

  • water deprivation
  • enclosed space
  • excessive humidity
  • obesity
  • exercise
  • age
  • cardiovascular disease
  • lack of acclimatization

Symptoms of heat stroke

  • Intense and rapid panting/ breathing
  • Wide eyes
  • Salivating
  • Staggering and weakness
  • The gums will appear pale and dry.
  • Advanced heat stroke victims will collapse and become unconscious.

What can you do about it?

The most obvious thing is not to leave your dog in the car! Also, on hot days don't take them to busy and crowded places

If you do decide to take them or leave them where they may have developed heat stroke, you must reduce body temperature as soon as possible. Submerge them up to the neck in cool water. If water is restricted, pour over whatever is available. The next thing to do is seek emergency veterinary help immediately.
