Jack Russell health issues - Kennel Cough
Kennel Cough or canine infectious tracheobronchitis is one of the most prevalent and infectious diseases in dogs. In the early stages a dog will attempt to clear the throat, later developing a hoarse cough. Fortunately, the majority of cases are not serious resolving on their own in 1 to 2 weeks. However, some dogs do develop life-threatening complications.
What does it sound like and what other symptoms are there?
- A cough - which sounds like a "honk" and owners often think the dog has something stuck in its throat.
- Occasionally the dog will cough up mucus.
- A discharge down the nose
- Difficulty breathing
- Pneumonia can occur (which can be fatal)
What can you do about it?
You must get your dog vaccinated to prevent them from becoming infected with this highly contagious disease. If they do develop it, your dog must be isolated and veterinary attention sought.
