Jack Russell health issues - obesity

"Too many calories and not enough exercise"

The biggest problems associated with canine obesity are musculoskeletal problems, compromised immune function, abnormal glucose tolerance, heat or exercise intolerance, and complications from cardiovascular or other diseases.

What can you do about it?

  • Don't give your dog table scraps
  • Give measured amounts of food rather than free feeding
  • Increase their activity levels - more walkies
  • Switch to a lower calorie dog food
  • Feed several times a day as feeding increases the metabolic rate, so feeding the same number of calories in four meals instead of one will reduce the number of usable calories, aiding in weight loss.

For more information, visit the Pedigree website which contains a great fact sheet about canine obesity
