A dog has been rescued after being trapped more than 4ft underground for four days.

Two-year-old terrier Jack fell into a badger sett while chasing a rabbit on Newbold Comyn, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, on Sunday afternoon.

Fire crews from Warwickshire and the West Midlands used specialist searching equipment to find and free the dog.

His owner Vicky Martin said everyone was "thrilled" to see the Jack Russell, who seemed to have escaped uninjured.

She added: "Words cannot describe it, we are so thrilled to see him. He's lost a bit of weight, but other than that he seems fine, it's just fabulous."

Ms Martin's partner Gary Middleton, who had been walking Jack when he vanished underground, kept vigil by the hole in case the terrier emerged.

Mr Middleton contacted the council's dog warden, who then contacted the RSPCA who suggested speaking to the fire service.

Jack finally emerged at about 1830 GMT on Wednesday.

Mr Middleton said: "He just didn't come back out, and we tried everything to get him out, calling and offering food, but he never appeared.

"I always knew he was okay though and that he was still down there."

Hi-tech search cameras were also used in the rescue operation and pushed down into the sett to try and find the terrier.

Crew commander Pete Sheppard, of West Midlands Fire Service, said: "We found Jack about four feet under the ground, and when we found him it looked like there had been a tunnel collapse behind him which stopped his escape.

"It was only down to the sandy kind of ground here that Jack survived. Because it was sandy it kept him warmer and the moisture from it kept him hydrated."
